Paying Attention

If you are paying attention and keeping an open mind you may be the recipient of a message from the beyond. There are many ways our dearly departed communicate with us. Even though I can communicate with spirits, for several months after my mother died from cancer in 2009, I had trouble recognizing her presence. It wasn’t for her lack of trying. It was because I hadn’t attuned myself to how she was communicating with me. While I was busy lighting candles and meditating; she was playing little pranks—all to get my attention. Finally she did.

My mother has several methods of reaching out. Her favorites are: turning on the vacuum cleaner in the middle of the night, turning on the TV on holidays or after family gatherings, laying down shiny pennies in unexpected places and playing her favorite song: "The Girl from Ipanema", when I’m out shopping or at restaurants. But most clever was inspiring her twin to walk in front of my car in a retail store parking lot.

I was on the phone with my brother at the time and we were discussing his daughter’s upcoming birthday party, when I looked up and saw a woman who looked like my mother walk in front of my car and enter the store. Quickly, I hung up and followed her inside covertly snapping photos. From behind, everything about her looked like my mother; she dressed like her, had the same posture, hair color and small hands with slightly crooked fingers. Finally, I approached her and said hello. When she turned to reply the face was similar, but not exact.

She wasn’t my mother; but she was her messenger. My encounter with Mother's twin was not by chance, it had been arranged by her spirit. Immediately, I texted the photo to my siblings saying: "Who does this look like." They all replied: "Mom!" I received her message loud and clear: "Include your Mother in the festivities." That weekend, at my niece’s birthday party we set a place for Mom at the table and cut her an extra big piece of cake. I know she was paying attention.
