The Feather

Ever since I chose the white feather for my blog icon they have been turning up frequently and in the strangest places. Single feathers, of various patterns and colors (although most often white), have been perfectly presented as though selected and placed by an artist’s hand. So beautiful, I’ve taken pictures! I found them as I walked along wooded paths, on sidewalks and city streets, as well as, indoors on the carpet in a restaurant and the floor of a grocery store. I even saw a white feather painted on the side of a car. When I was traveling, I opened my hotel room window and a small white feather blew in. Later when my traveling companion and I arrived at our next hotel, she found it in her suitcase.
Still with all these feathers turning up, I hadn’t considered them as important messages from my spirit guardians; I was just having fun seeing where the next one would show up. Until, I found a single yellow feather outside my back door. Duh! A yellow feather is as rare as it gets in Seattle! I realized I had been missing the message.
Guides often communicate with symbols, especially those found in nature. I believe there are two reasons for this. The earth’s natural realm is a member of the greater universal community and thus an open and willing partner in delivering spiritual messages. This is why many messages from your spiritual guidance team come through nature.
The second reason is that we create our reality through our emotions and a symbol speaks to the unconscious, evoking latent emotions which are the creative clay of physical manifestation. Symbols personify our feelings on any given subject (those from our experiences in this life, as well as from previous lives). When we work with a symbol, we activate the power of the unconscious mind to create what we focus upon and “real”-ize it in the NOW.
Try it yourself. Close your eyes and envision a snowflake. Then describe it with three characteristics. For me it’s beauty, perfection and awe. Now feel the emotions the snowflake evokes. I feel inspired, enlivened and amazed. The snowflake is an intricate and awe inspiring, yet temporary miracle that is precisely engineered by the creative genius of nature. I use the snowflake symbol for planning and executing important projects and events, when I especially need everything to come together perfectly.
An important tip to remember when manifesting: forget the mental affirmations and focusing on the future. Imagine you have what you desire NOW and revel in those feelings. Then ask for a symbol to represent how you’ll feel when you get it. In my experience it will either be revealed in your mind’s eye immediately, or within a few days it will become clear to you. So pay attention. You will be able to identify the symbol by the way it makes you feel when you reflect upon your desire.
Once you have a symbol, work with it. For instance, if you discover that the symbol of vibrant health for you is an apple, surround yourself with images of apples. Draw them, put pictures of them up on your make-up mirror and computer monitor, make it your phone screen saver, take photographs of them, keep a bowl full on the kitchen counter and by all means, eat them!
I chose the feather icon for my website simply because the image made me feel peaceful, uplifted, inspired and in tune with my soul. But it didn’t take much time on the internet to discover that the feather has universal symbolic meanings as well. Turns out most every spiritual culture considers feathers to be sacred links to the Divine.
As for me, I consider feathers as signs from my team of spirit guardians that they are near; a confirmation that I am on the right track; a playful way for us to acknowledge each other and build our rapport. After all, that’s part of being a good spirit partner; creating a symbolic language that both you and your spirit guides can use for communication in order to strengthen your relationship.
And one last bit of advice. Your symbols are yours alone! Yesterday, a client called concerned because a crow kept landing outside her kitchen window and the information on the internet about the bird was negative. I asked her:
“How does the crow make you feel?”
“Comforted—like everything is going to be OK.”
“Then that’s your answer. The crow is your guardian angels message to you that everything is going to be OK.”
Since her husband had just been in a serious accident, this was very good (and comforting) news.
Proof, that not all angels wear white feathers. Some wear black.
