Forget the Past, the Future is Now

Recently I was speaking with a longtime friend who realized he had been wearing an old pair of glasses for over a year. “I don’t know why I never noticed,” he said. “I was wondering why I was having trouble reading. Now that I have found the new pair, my vision is better than ever!” Somehow, he’d stashed the new glasses out of sight, put on the old pair and then continued to wear them every day thereafter.
A week later he called me with another strange occurrence. During the past year he had loaned two GoPro cameras to two separate people. Coincidently, they both returned them on the same day. “What are the chances of that happening?” he said.
My friend is a natural skeptic and prefers to apply logic to every situation. We talk often, but he isn’t much interested in my spiritual outlook or perspectives, so I only share my insights when he asks for them. Still, I am always paying attention and making note of what’s going on in his life. He chalked up wearing his old glasses as a funny and somewhat disconcerting indication that he’s getting older. It wasn’t until the simultaneous return of the GoPro cameras that he asked for my opinion.
In both of these instances, powerful messages from spirit were being delivered. In the case of the reading glasses, after over 25 years in one industry, my friend wanted a change but was having trouble transitioning to a new career path. For months, I had noticed in our conversations that he professed wanting a new start, however his words revealed that he didn’t really think he could make the change. Comments like, “I applied, but I’m not holding my breath,” and, “I don’t think I have the kind of experience they’re looking for.” These comments (both from the past perspective) hadn’t helped him land an interview in the present to create a more fulfilling future.
I’d known for a while that my friend was stuck and having trouble figuring out how to move forward. This was confirmed when during the same period of time, he began wearing the wrong glasses and loaned out cameras designed to allow one to see what’s ahead with an extra set of eyes. The return of the cameras, as well as finding the right pair of glasses, were signs from spirit that he was now equipped to move forward professionally. Once I explained this from the spiritual perspective, he had to agree that the messages were clear. Even the name “GoPro” indicated his readiness to “Go Pro” into a new career.
Within the same week, a client reported that her car had been sideswiped on the street outside her house. “The only thing that they hit was the driver’s side rearview mirror,” she said, “and it was ripped completely off!”
What’s common between both of these people’s stories is their focus from the past perspective, as well as that they each are in a challenging time of career change.
Every situation has a past and a future perspective. However, what we think and feel in each moment affects our reality now and into the future. When we see the world from the past perspective of what was, the future will mirror the past; but when we envision the future in terms of what can be, we now have the right perspective to manifest the changes we desire, rather than replicate more of the same.
I knew immediately what was going on when my client's mirror was ripped off. Ten years ago she had a business failure that cost her everything, due to an unscrupulous partner. Though she had made several attempts at finding a prosperous new career opportunity, none had worked out. She was discouraged and wondering what to do next. The destruction of her driver’s side rearview mirror made it clear. She was trying to do the impossible: create a fulfilling future from the perspective of a disappointing past.
I explained to her that cars symbolize your life path. This is the vehicle that takes you where you want to go. There is a driver who operates the car (the action and human aspect of you) and a passenger who navigates (the intuitive, spiritual aspect of you). Both are needed to get where you want to go. Without a driver you stay where you are and without a navigator you’ll drive in circles. And that was what she was doing. Instead of consulting her spiritual navigator for direction, she was referencing the past. When the universe stepped in and ripped off that mirror, the message was: Stop looking backwards for direction and instead consult the navigator who is seated right next to you in the now.
Your greatest allies in any situation are your spirit guardians. Your desire is what sets them in motion and they work diligently behind the scenes for you, pulling strings and making connections that will guide you to achieve your heart’s desires. But to realize the benefit of this Divine guidance you must access it from the now. Use your intuition—that inner sense of what feels right and good when making decisions—and never discount it. Don’t allow your limiting memories from the past, to overcome your positive feelings today of where you want to go tomorrow. And remember, be a good partner with your Divine team and trust your intuition. This is how you access your spiritual guidance.
Now for my message from spirit. It’s not an accident that both of these situations were brought to my attention at the same time. I too, need to stop referencing the past as I embark on a new career path. My Divine team knows how to guide me to my heart’s desires, all I have to do is be a good driver and listen to my navigator.
