An Answered Prayer

Spiritual faith is one of the greatest blessings. With it, the challenges of life are easier to endure and the good times are more satisfying. Having faith is easy when things are going well. It is in times of crisis that our faith is tested. But to have faith, we must first believe in an omniscient force that has the power to affect our lives.
I was raised Catholic so I grew up believing in God. But it wasn’t until I worked as a spiritual counselor that I understood that there are legions of spiritual beings helping us. Some of these beings, like guardian angels, personal spirit allies, past-life teachers and family ancestors are devoted to a specific person; others are universal forces such as Buddha, Isis and Jesus. All are powerful, unconditionally loving benefactors who listen and respond to our prayers.
Recently a man I know shared his story of faith with me. Marvin is an immigrant from Pakistan. He fled his homeland for America because he and his family were being persecuted for being Christians.
For years after Marvin came to the USA, he survived on odd and often unpleasant jobs. As an immigrant with no car and a scant proficiency in English, he was taken advantage of and mistreated by many. But he persevered, doing whatever he could to provide for his family. Finally, he was hired as a maintenance man at a respectable local business close to his home; and while the money still wasn’t enough to support his wife and daughter, it gave them some stability.
Today, Marvin lives in a low-income apartment with his ailing wife and his teenage daughter. He still has no car and makes barely enough money to survive. But, when you meet Marvin, you’d think that he hasn’t a care in the world. He is joyful all of the time. And if you were to ask him why he is joyful, he would proudly tell you his secret to happiness: “I love Jesus with all my heart.” He would then go on to say how deeply he loves his wife and daughter and how blessed he is to live in America.
Marvin’s test of faith came out of the blue. The business where he’d worked for seven years was unexpectedly sold and was closing. Marvin had four months to find another job. By month three he still had no prospects and fear began to creep in. The threat of not being able to provide for his family was just four weeks from becoming a reality.
He recalled the night as he walked home from work, when anxiety overcame him and he started to cry. “I wasn’t just crying because I couldn’t find a job,” he explained to me. “I was crying because I had trusted Jesus to take care of me and He hadn’t. I could feel I was losing my faith in Him.” So he started to pray, asking that his faith in Jesus be restored.
Then he saw something shiny on the pavement. It was a small, square, gold and silver pocket token with a cross embossed on it. Marvin was overjoyed! But it wasn’t until he turned it over and read the back side of the token that he knew all would be well. Jesus had not forsaken him.
Marvin believed the token was a sign from Jesus that his prayers had been heard. He was right. A week later he learned the new company wanted to keep him on as maintenance man. The news got even better when he learned he would not only receive a raise, but full benefits.
What did Marvin have to say about this?

“Praise the Lord!”
What do I have to say?
“Yes! And praise all our spirit guides and guardians!”
