Total Solar Eclipse August 21

The only way you haven’t heard about this upcoming celestial event is if you’re living on another planet. For those of us on earth and particularly if you live in the United States, the buzz about the eclipse has been going on for months.

The eclipse is the second new moon this month in the sign of Leo, a rare occurrence alone. But the fact that the second is an eclipse is rarer still.

Here are a few facts:

  • This is the first total solar eclipse over the United States since February 26, 1979. That eclipse went over Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. Previous to that, on March 7, 1970, there was another total eclipse over Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Virginia.

  • This total solar eclipse is the first to traverse the entire United States since June, 1918.

  • All states will see at least 75% of the eclipse.

  • The eclipse will occur at 28 degrees 53 minutes of Leo.

We’ve heard the astronomical details, but what does it mean astrologically? A solar eclipse is an intensified new moon, therefore all the usual attributes of a new moon apply, only with more impact. (Those with planet or points within 26 degrees of fixed signs (Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio) to 0 degree of the mutable signs (Pisces, Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius) are the most affected.)

Every new moon is about new beginnings, endeavors, and making things grow. Those things you let go of back on August 7 at the full moon, have opened the door for your new intentions to get under way. Now the big question: What do you want to manifest? Since this eclipse is in Leo--the sign associated with leadership, as well as personal fulfillment, love, expression of creativity, appreciation and fun--it offers the opportunity to fulfill your heart's desires. The secret (as always) is trusting your emotions.

Dig deep and connect with what your life is calling you to be, do or have. Use your imagination and envision the future as you’d like it to be and focus on good feeling goals to get you there. Remember, your emotional radar is your intuition and the way you access your highest guidance.

It’s normal to feel fear and doubt in this process, but these are habitual mental responses, not spiritual guidance from your soul.

Once you have clarified your joyful intentions for the future, ask your Divine team to step in and assist. Be a good spirit partner by acknowledging and acting upon the messages you receive. Pay attention to synchronous occurrences, as these may be signs from your spirit allies. Give thanks for the support and guidance your spirit team provides. And most importantly: trust your intuition.

Want to maximize the manifesting power of this new moon solar eclipse? Here is my favorite new moon ritual. The most powerful time to commence this ritual is at the moment of the *new moon or as soon as you can thereafter.

  • Purify your heart. Be honest about “why” you want what you’re asking for. Always ask to manifest for the highest good of all concerned.

  • Clarify your intention. What wishes and dreams do you hope to fulfill? I advise you to focus on “How do I want to feel about my manifested desires?” rather than on a specific outcome. For instance, if it’s a new job, instead of focusing on a particular position or company, think about how you want to feel in your new job. This allows your spirit guardians to use the resources at their disposal to bring you a fulfilling outcome. (For more information about how to manifest using a symbol, see my blog post: The Feather.) Create a sacred space. It can be anywhere, but make sure it is private, peaceful, and clutter free.

  • Choose a dedicated sacred space. It can be anywhere, but make sure it is private, peaceful, and clutter free. Whenever possible, return to the same sacred space for your moon ceremony every two weeks. Once a sacred space is activated, it continues to grow in power.

  • Collect your sacred tools. What’s most important here is that these tools feel sacred to you. But for sure you’ll need a pencil or pen and paper, candle (I use a tea light), sage and cedar or incense, and any other objects that represent sacred power to you. These could be crystals, stones, images or photos of spiritual people, places or things. It could also include figurines or pictures of your spiritual VIPs like Jesus, Buddha, Mary, Ganesh…the list goes on. I also like to use a special cloth on my altar intended just for this purpose. This helps to consolidate and focus the energy; and each time I use it, I am reactivating the ceremonial power that has accumulated through time.

Now the fun part. Prepare your sacred space. Lay out your sacred cloth if you have one. Place the candle at the center and surround it with your sacred objects. Next your sage and cedar or incense with matches and a pencil or pen and paper. Close your eyes and ask for Divine presence and protection. Extend a special invitation to your team of spirit guardians. Imagine a circle around you and your altar and ask that the space be made sacred. Keep meditating on this until you feel at peace.

From this place of peace, light your candle. Next light the sage and cedar or incense and gently “smudge” the circle and everything within it. Close your eyes again and ask for clarity of your intention and the emotions that will best serve to bring your wishes and dreams to fruition, then write your wishes and dreams down. You can make as many individual wishes as you like, but remember, less may be more. Wishes with unfocused intent behind them will not gain momentum and could diminish the power of your deepest desires. Put the list under your candle.

Next close your eyes and say a prayer of gratitude to the Divine forces working on your behalf. You have placed your sacred wishes and dreams in their hands. As a good spirit partner, you must now believe that what you truly desire is on its way to you. Faith enhances the momentum of your manifestation; a lack of faith slows it down.

I like to conclude the ceremony by saying “So be it.” But you can say, “Amen,” “Let it be,” “Thy will be done,” or whatever words suit you. Then either blow out your candle or let it burn out. Collect your sacred objects, written wishes, fold up your cloth and put it all in a special place until the next ceremony.

So be it!

*In the Pacific Northwest this will be at 10:21 am PDT. Check the time zone in your area.
